Witney

24-05-2011

Witney is a beautiful market town in the West Oxfordshire District. It has 23,000 inhabitants and is situated between the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire border with quick access to the M4, M5 and M40 motorways.

Witney’s history goes back to Iron Age and Roman settlements. It is believed that the name Witney comes from the word Witan, which was the name of the Saxon King’s Council. In Saxon times the Witan had the right to choose their king. Since the Middle Ages Witney has been world famous for its high quality woollen blankets. At one time the town could boast 5 successful blanket factories. Sadly however, the last of these was closed in 2002.

Today Witney is best known for being the constituency of Britain’s prime minister David Cameron. Another famous son of Witney is the Robert Llewellyn, the actor of the mechanoid Kryten in the hit sitcom Red Dwarf.
